After the debacle with the zombies, Joan was feeling a bit more careful about what doors she should go through. Again, despite the supernatural existence of the Nexus, she had never considered herself to be in any danger beyond what she faced every day in New York - which was more than she had ever been used to as a doctor, but still something she had come to terms with after Sherlock had come into her life. But now she realized how foolish that was, to have treated the Nexus so lackadaisically.

She had gone back to New York for a bit to work on a case, and when she returned to the Nexus again she wasn't sure how much time had passed, but she didn't think very much had. She was more wary, now, but not prepared to let the Nexus go just yet. There was too much to it for her to fully ignore it, and after all, it wasn't in Joan to get disenchanted by any one thing. There was a reason she had not left Sherlock after she had been attacked by a dirty cop, had stayed on since then beyond the mounting threats. She enjoyed the unexpected; thrived off of it, even.

She had intended to go up to her room and take a nap (it had been another late night and early morning at the brownstone) but once she was back in the hotel she found she wasn't that tired. She began to walk through the halls, looking for anyone she might know in case they'd like to grab coffee. She could use a bit of interaction.

Sif, on her part, had not even gone through any doors. She had merely opened them, not found Asgard, and closed them again. Not that she wasn't curious, after all she had heard of them. It was just that she needed to find Asgard again as fast as possible.

At this point the Asgardian had lost count of how many halls she had walked through, how many doors she had opened. None had been to Asgard yet. She was becoming impatient. Well, more than usual anyway.

Just short of punching a hole through a wall Sif looked to her side just in time to see a black haired woman walking in her direction. "You!" she called, turning fully to face her. "Forgive me, have you been through any portals to other realms lately?" It was what she had resorted to - searching for people who had been there instead of doors leading her there. It might work!

The hopefulness bubbling up in Sif was promptly brought down by the woman's description of where she had been. Asgard could not be described as 'not very nice' whichever way you looked at it. Even if the door opened into the prison. It was still a marvellous sort of view, surely. It couldn't have been Asgard.

"I am looking for the realm of Asgard, where I am from. It is large and wide with mountains afar, water flowing all through it, tall buildings decorated with intricate designs in their columns." Sif's eyes were wide, shining with the recollection of the land she so loved. "It is a wonderful place; golden when the sun is down, its light hitting the metal buildings and reflecting it everywhere. It is a sight." Sif stopped herself upon realizing how long she had been talking. The shield-maiden chuckled. "Forgive me, I got carried away."

Sif deflated immediately, a deep sigh escaping her. However, it looked like the woman wanted to help, and she was not going to refuse. "Days. Five days, I believe. And I must leave at once, my duty will not let me remain any longer." She was beginning to get nervous.

As for her method, there hadn't been one. Sif hesitated to answer. "I...Well, I have been opening every door I see. I started outside my room, worked my way downstairs and into the grounds, was unsuccessful and now I am here. Working my way back up again."

Not long ago a thought had begun nagging at Sif, that consisted basically of this: there was no point in fretting, or worrying, because the door would not present itself any faster if she did. The problem was that after this thought a completely antagonizing one formed, wherein Sif imagined months, years going by without her showing her face in Asgard. Then she thought of how much her friends would worry, how much trouble they could get into, what might happen to Asgard itself. Sif had no dellusions of grandeur regarding how important she was usually but the truth was that Asgardian forces were quite bare after the business with the Dark Elves, and her beloved homeland needed every help it could get.

After these two lines of thought crossed, Sif found herself rather the same: anxious, impatient, and more than a little concerned. She considered what the woman said about cycles, and found she didn't understand it. "What do you mean by cycle? That when some open others do not, and on it goes?" How long would that take?!

This woman wasn't a warrior that she knew of - not by name and not by presentation, look or disposition - and so Sif did not grab her arm like she had Natasha and the Captain. Instead, Sif held it carefully so as to not grip too tightly and gave it a subtle shake before letting go. The name, however, gave her pause. "Wat...son? But you are a lady, are you not? Forgive me if I assume wrong."

Well now she was just making it worse. Unpredictable but usually predictable...That did not help. Not that it was the small-statured lady's fault, of course, but Sif couldn't help a sigh of impatience. When she explained, Sif's brow remained furrowed, though there was a hint of hope there. "Like seasons. I see. If like seasons all I must do is wait patiently until it becomes its time, I can only hope all is not lost by the time I arrive at home." She said morosely.

In Sif's experience, a surname denoted many things. Not gender per se, but parentage. Perhaps it was not so where Joan had come from. "I only mean, at home your name would mean you are the son of a man named Wat. Though perhaps you inherited your father's own surname instead of adding a suffix to his first name!" She reasoned, easy smile on her face. Giving a slight bow, Sif introduced herself. "I am the Lady Sif of Asgard. I apologize for the rude approach earlier, this place has me forgetting my manners."

With a dismissive hand gesture, Sif shook her head. "Not your fault!" She assured the woman. Her disappointment over her own circumstances had nothing to do with Joan, and she very much doubted Joan was withholding vital information that could help anyway.

Naming customs in Midgard had never even crossed Sif's mind, who offered Joan a facial shrug which immediately turned into a smile as the woman manifested pleasure in meeting her. "Likewise, Joan. Have you been here very long at all?"

Of the people she had met so far, Joan was the only one (to Sif's knowledge) who indeed travelled between her own reality and the hotel frequently. It was very curious, as evidenced by Sif's raised brow. "Your words give me hope. That I could travel between my home and this place would be the ideal arrangement." She wondered what Joan did that warranted her total removal from her own world for sleep. Nothing better than to ask.

"What is it you do when you go home? I can understand needing rest, and this place lends itself to that perfectly, but I doubt most people would go to such lengths to sleep. Or use this rare place to sleep." There was no judgement in her voice, mere curiosity. Sif wasn't one to judge people's motives for the most mundane of tasks especially if they did not harm anyone.

Although it looked to Sif that Joan was attempting to find the words to explain a complicated concept, it did not sound so complicated once the lady said it out loud at first. Once she elaborated, however, Sif took a little longer to piece it together. "Is your law enforcement not competent enough that it needs outside assistance?" Sif was genuinely curious.

The extent of her knowledge on Midgardian law enforcement was limited to S.H.I.E.L.D. and she knew that was not the common law enforcement most Midgardians were used to - that if Joan was even from Midgard. Like Jemma had said, some of the people here seemed not to be. Though since Joan had mentioned New York, the place Sif knew to be the one Loki had attacked with the Chitauri, Sif simply assumed.

What Sif did understand was the concept of needing an escape. Sif hadn't known how much she would benefit from one until she had unwittingly found it, albeit with all sorts of ghosts from the past.

Nodding, Sif smiled, glad to hear that Joan had not met anyone simply stuck in this place. Sif was about to answer Joan easily, when, after a pause in which her mouth remained open, Sif chuckled with realization. "Something akin to what what you do, in that I aid some type of law enforcement though on a more...physical kind of role. I am a warrior, a shield-maiden. Along with others I protect the nine realms of Yggdrasil from its threats and those who would do them harm." It wasn't completely along the same lines as what Joan did, but it had its similarities - in a broad sense if nothing else.

Tilting her head, Sif raised an eeybrow in doubt. "A force that is outnumbered so easily is not fit to protect the commonfolk, Joan. I do not doubt that they do their best, but clearly it is not good enough." Then, she smiled. "Though it is brave of you to aid in stopping crime. Or at least seek justice for the ones that occurred."

A soldier on the frontlines was a good assessment of what Sif did, and so she nodded in acceptance of Joan's supposition. "Indeed, that is what I am, though not part of an army, entirely. You are of Midg-Earth, I take it you have heard of Thor?"

Clearly, though Sif had not meant to at all, she had caused offense. Joan was much calmer and collected in showing her displeasure than if it had been her casting doubt on the motivations and competence of Sif's fellow warriors, a thing that had not gone unnoticed. While surprised, Sif's expression had no more hardness in it than it had before, though curiosity was gone. "You misunderstand my meaning, I'm afraid. I meant not to cast doubt upon your law enforcement's competence a second time. If you stated that they are, indeed, competent I have no reason to doubt your judgement. I meant merely the numbers. A force spread so thin has little hope to win against crime, is that not so? It is worrisome, for their own safety as well as the people at large. Is there no concern of your government for their people that they would not provide for larger numbers? Or is this not so simple? You must forgive me, again. I confess my experience with your land is limited only to a few days under very specific outside circumstances. I have not visited Midgard for recreation though I hope to some day."

She tried again for a smile, one hand coming to her breast. "I apologize for causing offense, Joan. Though I have only worked with very specific law enforcement in your land they did their most and we succeeded in what we set out to accomplish - which answers your other concerns. Though she had escaped to your land the criminal we worked to apprehend is a fellow Asgardian who had wreaked insurmountable amounts of havoc in our home before we apprehended her the first time. Of course there is crime in Asgard, as there is everywhere else, I suppose." She looked at the tiny - though strong, in mind if not body - woman apologetically. "I meant no disrespect to you or the people you aid. It is noble work you all do, I hope you believe me. Though we are a people who has waged war in defense of our and other realms for so long we breed warriors more than anything else, I know it is not only in my home that they exist, and I know not all warriors charge into open battlefield atop a horse." It was a truth she had taken time learning, but eventually it had become clear as day.

As for Thor... "Well, he is my...friend." She said after a pause. "You must know his name from legend, as I understand it some of your people long ago thought us gods. It is them we rescued from other invaders."

Looking at the tiny woman with a smile of approval, Sif sighed. "You are an honorable woman, Joan, and I respect your refusal to embiggen yourself at other people's expense." Putting her hands on her waist, Sif looked up in thought. "I suppose I should endeavor to learn more about your realm. But I understand governments not getting along, however."

Sif nodded. "Norse...Yes I suppose that is what you call the people whom we first aided. A long, long time ago, by your standards. Centuries." She chuckled at Joan's hesitation. "Well, not entirely. My people and I simply live much longer than yours. We are in many ways different physically, I've been noticing."
