After the debacle with the zombies, Joan was feeling a bit more careful about what doors she should go through. Again, despite the supernatural existence of the Nexus, she had never considered herself to be in any danger beyond what she faced every day in New York - which was more than she had ever been used to as a doctor, but still something she had come to terms with after Sherlock had come into her life. But now she realized how foolish that was, to have treated the Nexus so lackadaisically.
She had gone back to New York for a bit to work on a case, and when she returned to the Nexus again she wasn't sure how much time had passed, but she didn't think very much had. She was more wary, now, but not prepared to let the Nexus go just yet. There was too much to it for her to fully ignore it, and after all, it wasn't in Joan to get disenchanted by any one thing. There was a reason she had not left Sherlock after she had been attacked by a dirty cop, had stayed on since then beyond the mounting threats. She enjoyed the unexpected; thrived off of it, even.
She had intended to go up to her room and take a nap (it had been another late night and early morning at the brownstone) but once she was back in the hotel she found she wasn't that tired. She began to walk through the halls, looking for anyone she might know in case they'd like to grab coffee. She could use a bit of interaction.

Date: 2014-04-12 12:37 am (UTC)At this point the Asgardian had lost count of how many halls she had walked through, how many doors she had opened. None had been to Asgard yet. She was becoming impatient. Well, more than usual anyway.
Just short of punching a hole through a wall Sif looked to her side just in time to see a black haired woman walking in her direction. "You!" she called, turning fully to face her. "Forgive me, have you been through any portals to other realms lately?" It was what she had resorted to - searching for people who had been there instead of doors leading her there. It might work!

Date: 2014-04-13 12:27 am (UTC)Her eyes picked out other things, too, the biggest of which was the other woman's rather unconventional clothing. Still, she said nothing. "Yes, I have," she said. "But it wasn't a very nice one. What are you looking for?"

Date: 2014-04-13 06:06 pm (UTC)"I am looking for the realm of Asgard, where I am from. It is large and wide with mountains afar, water flowing all through it, tall buildings decorated with intricate designs in their columns." Sif's eyes were wide, shining with the recollection of the land she so loved. "It is a wonderful place; golden when the sun is down, its light hitting the metal buildings and reflecting it everywhere. It is a sight." Sif stopped herself upon realizing how long she had been talking. The shield-maiden chuckled. "Forgive me, I got carried away."

Date: 2014-04-13 11:13 pm (UTC)She rocked back on her heels (not as viciously tall as the ones she had worn last time, paranoid as she was of wandering into yet another dangerous situation, regardless of how unlikely it was) and considered the issue at hand. "How long have you been here?" she asked. Sometimes the hotel was not so ready to let go of its arrivals. "And how have you been looking?"

Date: 2014-04-14 08:42 pm (UTC)As for her method, there hadn't been one. Sif hesitated to answer. "I...Well, I have been opening every door I see. I started outside my room, worked my way downstairs and into the grounds, was unsuccessful and now I am here. Working my way back up again."

Date: 2014-04-14 11:41 pm (UTC)She held out her hand. "I'm Joan Watson," she said. "I go back and forth between here and my door pretty regularly. Try not to force it. It should present itself to you soon enough."

Date: 2014-04-15 09:07 pm (UTC)After these two lines of thought crossed, Sif found herself rather the same: anxious, impatient, and more than a little concerned. She considered what the woman said about cycles, and found she didn't understand it. "What do you mean by cycle? That when some open others do not, and on it goes?" How long would that take?!
This woman wasn't a warrior that she knew of - not by name and not by presentation, look or disposition - and so Sif did not grab her arm like she had Natasha and the Captain. Instead, Sif held it carefully so as to not grip too tightly and gave it a subtle shake before letting go. The name, however, gave her pause. "Wat...son? But you are a lady, are you not? Forgive me if I assume wrong."

Date: 2014-04-16 08:32 pm (UTC)Only the pause the other woman placed between her surname gave Joan the hint as to what, exactly, she was talking about. "Uh, yes," she said, and her laugh was slightly awkward, if only because she'd certainly never been asked about her gender before. "I am. That's okay. Watson is just a surname. It doesn't really denote gender. What's your name?"

Date: 2014-04-16 09:12 pm (UTC)In Sif's experience, a surname denoted many things. Not gender per se, but parentage. Perhaps it was not so where Joan had come from. "I only mean, at home your name would mean you are the son of a man named Wat. Though perhaps you inherited your father's own surname instead of adding a suffix to his first name!" She reasoned, easy smile on her face. Giving a slight bow, Sif introduced herself. "I am the Lady Sif of Asgard. I apologize for the rude approach earlier, this place has me forgetting my manners."

Date: 2014-04-16 09:44 pm (UTC)"Yes, that's how it's done where I'm from," she said, with a nod. Well - how it was done in America, at least. "It's nice to meet you, Sif." She was aware - this was no difficult thing to gauge - that the woman she was talking to was from a world far different from her own. Her bearing was unlike anything Joan had really experienced before - someone with perfect balance, and calloused hands, but she didn't seem like a soldier. Not any soldier she'd met, anyway.

Date: 2014-04-18 07:38 pm (UTC)Naming customs in Midgard had never even crossed Sif's mind, who offered Joan a facial shrug which immediately turned into a smile as the woman manifested pleasure in meeting her. "Likewise, Joan. Have you been here very long at all?"

Date: 2014-04-20 10:24 am (UTC)"I come here all the time," she said. "Between here and back home. A place called New York. I'm busy back there, so I come here for extra time. Mostly to sleep."

Date: 2014-04-20 08:19 pm (UTC)"What is it you do when you go home? I can understand needing rest, and this place lends itself to that perfectly, but I doubt most people would go to such lengths to sleep. Or use this rare place to sleep." There was no judgement in her voice, mere curiosity. Sif wasn't one to judge people's motives for the most mundane of tasks especially if they did not harm anyone.

Date: 2014-04-23 12:15 am (UTC)He also woke her up all the time, but at least he'd started to do it more calmly, like setting Clyde loose in her bed.
"I'm sure you'll be able to travel to and from easily enough," she said. "I haven't met anyone who's stuck, really. What do you do back home?" She had to assume it was something important, or Sif wouldn't want to go back so intently.

Date: 2014-04-26 07:44 pm (UTC)The extent of her knowledge on Midgardian law enforcement was limited to S.H.I.E.L.D. and she knew that was not the common law enforcement most Midgardians were used to - that if Joan was even from Midgard. Like Jemma had said, some of the people here seemed not to be. Though since Joan had mentioned New York, the place Sif knew to be the one Loki had attacked with the Chitauri, Sif simply assumed.
What Sif did understand was the concept of needing an escape. Sif hadn't known how much she would benefit from one until she had unwittingly found it, albeit with all sorts of ghosts from the past.
Nodding, Sif smiled, glad to hear that Joan had not met anyone simply stuck in this place. Sif was about to answer Joan easily, when, after a pause in which her mouth remained open, Sif chuckled with realization. "Something akin to what what you do, in that I aid some type of law enforcement though on a more...physical kind of role. I am a warrior, a shield-maiden. Along with others I protect the nine realms of Yggdrasil from its threats and those who would do them harm." It wasn't completely along the same lines as what Joan did, but it had its similarities - in a broad sense if nothing else.

Date: 2014-05-01 08:10 pm (UTC)The description Sif gave her reminded Joan of ridiculously huge fantasy novels with equally ridiculous cover art, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. "I guess you'd be like a soldier on the front lines," she hazarded. "That's... well, wow. That's amazing actually."

Date: 2014-05-05 06:33 pm (UTC)A soldier on the frontlines was a good assessment of what Sif did, and so she nodded in acceptance of Joan's supposition. "Indeed, that is what I am, though not part of an army, entirely. You are of Midg-Earth, I take it you have heard of Thor?"

Date: 2014-05-05 07:10 pm (UTC)"Actually, seeing as how they are men and women strong-willed enough to join their efforts together in helping people, however difficult, I would say they are more than fit for the job," she said. Her voice was calm, but there was no mistaking her displeasure; she had witnessed an ill remark against good people, and she was not, nor ever had been, a doormat. She wasn't going to scold Sif, but she would not shy from correcting her. "I wouldn't presume to cast aspersions on your set of justice, but I'd guess you come from a place that knows war. So you defend from outside attackers, but how much experience do you have fighting crime that's in there with you? Or do you not have any? That'd suggest a police state. But in my experience, where there are people, there are crimes as much as there are good deeds, and putting yourself in danger to protect against them is not considered a healthy lifestyle choice where I come from. But people do it and their own lives suffer, so I don't think it particularly respectful to deem them 'unfit'."
It didn't matter that Sif had just admitted she was a soldier, and therefore dangerous. Her body language was straight, narrow, noble; Joan expected to meet either a closed door against her arguments, an apology, or maybe even a correction from Sif herself (Joan was not so proud as to think she was, at all times, one hundred percent right). But Sif didn't radiate aggression, so Joan was not afraid to speak her mind.
Folding her arms over her chest, she nodded. "The name rings a bell," she said.

Date: 2014-05-05 10:54 pm (UTC)She tried again for a smile, one hand coming to her breast. "I apologize for causing offense, Joan. Though I have only worked with very specific law enforcement in your land they did their most and we succeeded in what we set out to accomplish - which answers your other concerns. Though she had escaped to your land the criminal we worked to apprehend is a fellow Asgardian who had wreaked insurmountable amounts of havoc in our home before we apprehended her the first time. Of course there is crime in Asgard, as there is everywhere else, I suppose." She looked at the tiny - though strong, in mind if not body - woman apologetically. "I meant no disrespect to you or the people you aid. It is noble work you all do, I hope you believe me. Though we are a people who has waged war in defense of our and other realms for so long we breed warriors more than anything else, I know it is not only in my home that they exist, and I know not all warriors charge into open battlefield atop a horse." It was a truth she had taken time learning, but eventually it had become clear as day.
As for Thor... "Well, he is my...friend." She said after a pause. "You must know his name from legend, as I understand it some of your people long ago thought us gods. It is them we rescued from other invaders."

Date: 2014-05-13 07:31 am (UTC)She nodded. "Alright," she said. "Thank you - for the apology and the compliment you paid me earlier. I do appreciate it, but I don't think any flattery should come to me at the expense of anyone else, so I had to mention it. Our government is very concerned about its people, but it's more complicated than sending out troops. Because we have more than one government, as well, and they don't all get along." She wondered what Sif was used to; one single, governing body? Sounded like it. Monarchy or dictatorship? Probably monarchy.
"I've heard the name, but beyond that - not really," she said. "I think he's Norse? The deities I know about most aren't from that area of the world." Then, realizing she had rolled with that part of the conversation quite naturally, as if they were discussing a magazine editorial, she paused. "How long ago?" she asked. "Are... are you an immortal?"
no subject
Date: 2014-05-14 03:13 am (UTC)Sif nodded. "Norse...Yes I suppose that is what you call the people whom we first aided. A long, long time ago, by your standards. Centuries." She chuckled at Joan's hesitation. "Well, not entirely. My people and I simply live much longer than yours. We are in many ways different physically, I've been noticing."
